Over the span of this long service time, we have encountered many situations, particularly with bed bugs, where homeowners thought they could handle the infestation on their own. These stains can appear when bed bugs are crushed while you sleep. The amount of staining can indicate the severity of the infestation – more stains may point to a larger bed bug problem.
Itchy red bites on your body
When bed bugs are present in your home, they feed on human blood. Their bites can leave behind itchy red marks or raised bumps on the skin. These bites may sometimes appear in a straight line or clustered pattern.
Musty odor around infested areas
Heavy bed bug infestations can produce a very noticeable musty smell. This odor often comes from areas where bed bugs are hiding along with their eggs and waste buildup in heavily infested locations.
Can You Get Rid of Bed Bugs Yourself?
Speaking from experience, a bed bug infestation is by far one of the most difficult pest problems to get rid of. They spread quickly and can lay eggs in deep, hidden areas of bedding, furniture, cracks, and other hard-to-reach spaces. The more space they have to hide, the more difficult the infestation becomes to control.
You can get rid of bed bugs yourself if the infestation is small and your space does not have many potential hiding spots. If it is limited to a single room or a smaller area, you can use some smart treatment methods. With careful attention, hard work and a solid fighting spirit, you can definitely take steps toward getting rid of bed bugs.
DIY Bed Bug Extermination: What Works and What Doesn't
We’re not going to tell you DIY never works because that wouldn’t be honest. If you catch an infestation early – meaning you spot one or two bugs, no eggs, no fecal spotting on the mattress seams, no bites yet then you might be able to get ahead of it with:
- Washing and heat-drying all bedding and clothing on the highest setting
- Vacuuming mattresses, box springs and baseboards thoroughly and often
- Encasing your mattress and box spring in a bed bug-proof cover
- Steam-treating cracks and crevices near the bed frame
DIY Bed BuG Treatment: What's the Issue?
Those steps work in a genuinely limited scenario. What doesn’t work, no matter how many times homeowners try it, is relying on over-the-counter sprays as your whole strategy. Bed bugs have built up resistance to a lot of the pyrethroid-based sprays sold at hardware stores and worse, spraying can scatter a colony rather than kill it. Instead of one contained hiding spot, you end up pushing bugs into the walls, the carpet edges, the neighboring room. Foggers have the same problem – they kill what’s out in the open and do almost nothing to the eggs and bugs tucked into cracks and seams.
The DIY approach only works if you catch it early, do it thoroughly and do it consistently. Miss one pregnant female hiding behind an outlet cover, and you’re back to square one in a few weeks – except now she’s had time to lay a hundred more eggs!
